A man was sent to the hospital after he crashed an allegedly stolen motorcycle early Tuesday morning while leading police on a chase in southwest Houston.

The incident began about 4 a.m. near Woodhead and West Gray near the River Oaks Shopping Center, said Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department.

Crowson said a man told investigators his motorcycle had been stolen a few days ago and he noticed later that someone posted it for sale on Craigslist. He contacted the seller and arranged to meet him at Woodhead and West Gray. Then he alerted police.

When officers arrived, they spotted the stolen motorcycle. The offices tried to pull over the rider, but he sped away. The officers followed him.

The very brief chase ended at Shepherd near Richmond when the rider hit  a curb and crashed. He broke his leg and hurt his ankle in the wreck and was rushed to a nearby hospital. His condition was not released, but Crowson said the man is expected to survive.

Crowson said the circumstances surrounding the incident are “unusual.” The motorcycle owner took matters into his own hands.

“He did a little bit of his own detective work,” Crowson said. “Please contact us,” Crowson warned other victims of thefts. “Don’t try to handle it yourself.”
